How had I not heard of this author until now? This was an incredible debut; a spooky ghost story set during the Spanish Influenza outbreak and WWI. Its excellent worldbuilding weaves the spiritualist craze and fear of disease and death into an emotional, high-stakes tale that touches on romance, justice, mystery and murder. Mildly anachronistic language use is more than made up for by the strong sense of place and time that the author manages to convey. Relatable, sympathetic character portrayals that skate around the edges of too-modern sensibilities. All-round enjoyable read; can't wait to start in on more by this author!
